After presenting the different contexts in which animal welfare is assessed, and detailing the integration process, which enables us to move from an individual welfare score to an overall score for the farm, we present the reference protocol for animal welfare assessment. This is the Welfare Quality® protocol, which has been the subject of extensive scientific research and provides an objective assessment of the welfare of pigs, cattle and poultry.

The aim of this protocol is to provide an objective assessment of animal welfare on a farm.

Keep in mind
- The Welfare Quality protocol is the reference for welfare assessment in cattle, pigs and poultry.
- It comprises several principles, themselves subdivided into criteria. A detailed study of all the criteria is then carried out to obtain an overall animal welfare score.
- The principles of the Welfare Quality protocol are based on a positive assessment of welfare, not an absence of ill-being.
