- The 5 freedoms principle is an operational definition of animal welfare that can be applied in the field.
- It was formulated in 1979 by the Farm Animal Welfare Council to guarantee animal welfare.
- Animals must not suffer from hunger, thirst, discomfort, injury, illness or anxiety. They must also have the freedom to express behaviors specific to their species.
