Popular as pets, domestic rabbits are now commonplace in French households. This new species sheet, following on from the one on horses, is an opportunity to revisit the characteristics and needs of rabbits!
This species sheet was developed with Mélina Lattari and reviewed by Samuel Boucher, veterinarian and member of Labovet Conseil, Laura Warin, animal welfare project manager at ITAVI, and Chantal Davoust, head of France LAPIN and Basse cour within the ADM.
Keep in mind
- Rabbits are social animals that live in groups, where a dominance hierarchy is established among individuals.
- Rabbits express their emotions through body language and vocalizations: it is essential to be familiar with these.
- Rabbits have various behavioral needs (hiding, gnawing, etc.) which, if not met, can lead to stereotypical behavior.
- To pinpoint the location of a sound, rabbits stand up on their hind legs and prick up their ears.
