These regulations aim for a &#8220;<em>total replacement of procedures applied to live animals for scientific and educational purposes, as soon as scientifically possible<\/em>&#8220;. In other words, the objective is to <strong>replace the use of animals <\/strong> for scientific purposes with non-animal <strong>alternatives<\/strong> as soon as possible. Alternatives must be <strong>reliable and validated<\/strong> for each scientific study. Various techniques have already been developed (e.g. use of <em>in vitro<\/em> models) to <strong>reduce<\/strong> the number of animals used.<\/p>\n<p>For scientific studies with no alternative, <strong>regulations govern <\/strong> the use of animals and their placement <strong>under certain conditions.<\/strong> Depending on the species concerned (pets: dogs, cats, rodents, etc.; farm animals: cows, sheep, etc.; wild animals: primates, etc.), this may be in a <strong>foster home<\/strong>, a <strong>breeding system<\/strong> adapted to the species, <strong>a refuge<\/strong>, or in their <strong>natural habitat <\/strong> for certain wild species.<\/p>\n<p>Certain conditions must be met:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The animal&#8217;s <strong>state of health<\/strong> must allow it to be placed,<\/li>\n<li>There must be <strong>no danger<\/strong> to public health, animal health or the environment (e.g. the animal must not have been infected with a transmissible pathogen),<\/li>\n<li>Appropriate measures must exist to <strong> safeguard the animal&#8217;s welfare<\/strong><sup id=\"3'\"><a href=\"#3\" data-type=\"internal\" and ensure the success of the operation, research facilities wishing to place animals must have a <strong>socialization or rehabilitation program in place <\/strong> in the case of wild animals for scientific purposes is a principle that <strong> is added to the 3R rule<\/strong> (<strong><em>Replacement, Reduction, Refinement<\/em><\/strong>), and is sometimes considered as <strong>a <strong>preparation of the animal <\/strong> is a very important step. Laboratory housing conditions are <strong>very particular<\/strong> indeed, and despite many efforts to <strong>enrich and socialize <\/strong> the animals, the laboratory environment is <strong>often quite different <\/strong> from the environment the animal will experience after rehoming, and the new situations it will encounter. In practice, the laboratory must submit a <strong>request to the DDPP<\/strong> (Direction D\u00e9partementale de la Protection des Populations) overseeing the laboratory, which will then liaise with the DDPP receiving the animals. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Some associations<\/strong> work to place animals used for scientific purposes. For instance, <strong>GRAAL<\/strong>, which has helped to place hundreds of animals. To help laboratories with the rehoming process, GRAAL, in partnership with the Direction G\u00e9n\u00e9rale de l&#8217;Alimentation (DGAl), has produced a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graaldefenseanimale.org\/content\/img\/guide\/Guide%20de%20la%20Retraite%20GRAAL%202018.pdf)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Manual for the retirement of laboratory animals.<\/strong><\/a> GRAAL is not a reception center, but acts as a <strong>facilitator<\/strong> between the various stakeholders involved, helping to place animals used for scientific purposes. <strong>GRAAL assists laboratories<\/strong> in their efforts to rehome animals, and selects suitable foster homes for them. Animals may be set up directly for <strong>adoption<\/strong> (by individuals), placed in <strong>shelters<\/strong> <strong>run by other animal protection associations<\/strong> (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.la-spa.fr\/missions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>SPA<\/strong><\/a>) while waiting to be adopted by families, or in <strong>specialized shelters<\/strong> that allow certain species to be placed (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/lahardonnerie.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>La Hardonnerie<\/strong><\/a>). <\/p>\n<p><strong>If you would like to adopt an animal that has been used for scientific purposes<\/strong>, please visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graal-defenseanimale.org\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the GRAAL website<\/a>, which will put you in touch with nearby shelters!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some laboratories are autonomous<\/strong> in their placement procedures from start to finish, and do not go through the intermediary of an association.
